Pruning Mission Support References After the After-Action Review
What it does
When an after action review closes, the Operations Manager opens a review of the affected mission support references, because units reuse those procedures to run daily tasking. A wrong call leaves teams on outdated instructions and erodes trust. The evidence arrives in mixed shapes, for example lessons captured as free text, uploaded briefing packs, structured task records, and unit-specific status codes.
The AI reads the document repository, case histories, rule updates, and approval records, then compares each source against the approved reference taxonomy. It groups near-duplicate procedures, checks freshness against review dates, and returns a curation task with a proposed action, confidence, and a short rationale. It flags conflicting instructions between units, references with missing ownership, and entries that two task categories claim at once, and never withdraws a reference on its own.
The Operations Manager accepts, corrects, retires, or escalates each proposed action for the reference. The Information Security Risk Manager enters only at a named threshold: handling classification, security policy, or specialist risk judgment. Decision authority stays with the accountable reference owner throughout. Rejected recommendations stay logged, and repeated overrides send the rule back to its owner.
Where the value comes from
Every hour the Operations Manager spends confirming which reference still holds is an hour taken from running operations. The headline benefit is faster review once a trusted, owned, non-duplicate procedure reaches the queue on the first pass, measured through `review_time_reduction`. In defense work, that keeps units acting on current instructions rather than pausing to debate which version still applies.
To build the business case, the client measures three things: annual in-scope curation volume, baseline minutes per task, and the fully loaded hourly cost of the reviewer. Those inputs feed the primary `transaction_based_time_saving` model that turns the benchmark range into an annual figure. Adoption from workflow logs confirms how much projected benefit becomes real.
Other streams stay out of the headline number. Duplicate and stale rework carries its own `error_rework_cost_avoidance` path and needs an independent rework baseline before it can be priced. Compliance review effort rides the same reviewer minutes already counted, so it validates rather than adds. `process_consistency`, `knowledge_accessibility`, `decision_traceability`, and `exception_visibility` carry no monetization path and no client inputs, so they stay control and audit indicators. Keeping the streams apart keeps the value evidence defensible.
How work changes
Manual searching, duplicate comparison, metadata checking, and stale source review decline for the Operations Manager. The role spends less time proving whether the mission support knowledge asset can be trusted. Routine checks move into a prepared queue with evidence and recommended actions.
Structured review work increases. The Operations Manager must assess confidence, confirm source authority, classify exceptions, and record final decisions. The role also improves the taxonomy by correcting weak metadata and closing feedback loops.
The Information Security Risk Manager participates only under defined conditions. They review curation tasks when compliance, legal authority, safety, or specialist interpretation affects publication. They do not share daily ownership of the queue.
Required skills include evidence review, metadata discipline, workflow governance, and clear escalation judgment. Accountability remains with the human owner who approves the governed knowledge update. Freed hours are monetizable when task volumes, review minutes, adoption, and capacity decisions are measured.
